Stimulating river restoration to enhance the quality of life

LIFE2RIVERS is a project that aims to stimulate river restoration in Slovenia by promoting a more collaborative and nature-based approach to river management. Slovenian rivers are under increasing pressure from human activities, including habitat degradation, pollution, river regulation and climate change, which affect aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity and the quality of life of people living alongside rivers. The project brings together public authorities, experts, researchers, practitioners, local communities and other stakeholders to strengthen knowledge, cooperation and public participation in river restoration. It is also developing a new professional framework to strengthen ecological expertise, enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and promote higher ethical standards in river management.

A key focus of the project is the Pšata River catchment, where LIFE2RIVERS will demonstrate co-creative river stewardship and participatory approaches to developing river restoration plans. Through training, knowledge exchange, stakeholder engagement and public awareness activities, the project will promote nature-based solutions and support a long-term shift towards more sustainable river management. The knowledge and experience gained will be shared and transferred to other river catchments, strengthening river restoration practices nationwide and contributing to healthier rivers, more resilient ecosystems and an improved quality of life for people.
