Want to know more about restoring eutrophic lakes - Algae Be Gone

/ Categories: Fisheries

Eutrophic lakes are characterized by having frequent and intense toxic algal blooms and a fish fauna dominated by commercially less valuable species of cyprinids. The combinations of high nutrient concentrations of phosphorous and high biomass of cyprinid fish are the driving forces behind the eutrophic stage of these lakes. Eutrophic lakes are in many aspects in an unwanted stage, both from an ecological point of view as from a commercial and recreational point of view.

The goal of developing cost efficient methods will be achieved by improving biomanipulation efficiency (the removal of cyprinids) in combination with techniques for reducing the internal loading of phosphorous from lake sediments. Furthermore, at the same time we identify and quantify the current sources of phosphorous entering the lakes in the catchment.

ABG hope to present a comprehensive guide. This will include cost efficient and scientifically sound methods regarding biomanipulation efficiency (the removal of cyprinids) in combination with techniques for reducing the internal loading of phosphorous from lake sediments and external pollution of phosphorous that can be applied to improve the conditions of eutrophic lakes in Europe.

ABG is a water management project within the Oresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak program, running in 2011-2013. These projects are financed through the European Regional Development Fund and focus on encouraging and supporting cross-border cooperation in the southwestern part of Scandinavia.
